Maui Day 1 & 2

For the birthday-that-shall-not-be-named, I decided I wanted a low-stress trip, no foreign travel, when the idea hit me to take Jessa and Britney to Maui. I was shocked that their parents agreed to let us take them. Although they’ve spent a lot of weekends at our house, we’ve never taken them anywhere for an extended period of time, let alone on an airplane. I worried for months before the trip that they’d be attacked by a shark or get a horrible sunburn and that their moms would murder me when we got back LOL.

Since our Hawaiian flight left Sea-Tac at 6:00 AM, we decided to stay at a sketchy Tukwila hotel the night before. We had dinner at Taco Time the day before our flight which probably wasn’t a great idea for 4 people sharing one hotel room and one bathroom. We woke up at 3:00 AM and were at the airport by 4:00 AM. On the plane, Marc shared a 2-seater with Jessa and Britney and I sat together. Total airfare for four non-stop tickets SEA to OGG was $1555. I found a nice condo in Lahaina in the Hale Mahina condos. I chose it because it has a sandy beach in front of the condo so we’d be able to snorkel from there.

The flight was uneventful. We played card games and watched movies. I wouldn’t let Jessa have any coffee and chugged down two Mai Tais in addition to the free wine (God I love flying Hawaiian). We got our rental car then headed for the condo.

Day 2

I woke up at 4:30 AM after falling asleep at 9:00 PM the night before. At 6:15, Brit used the bathroom and I went into the living room. They were both awake. We ate breakfast and set out to get snorkel gear. Went to Snorkel Bob’s at Napili Bay and rented gear for a week. I also bought Jessa an SPF swim shirt since she’s the one I’m most worried about getting sunburned. Brit’s like me and tans easily.

We got a good spot at Napili. It was a bit cloudy and the sun would peek out from the clouds but overall the snorkel conditions were good with low surf. I was worried the girls would be nervous about snorkeling like I was my first time, but they dove right in and weren’t afraid at all. We saw tons of fish, an eel and a turtle. Snorkeled for about a 45 min. then went to eat and hydrate at our beach chair camp. Back in and swam to the rocks along the right side of the bay. Did another 45 min then came out and by the it was only 10:00 AM. We went to change in the bathrooms and there was a long line for the women’s bathroom and no one waiting for the men’s so I went in (single-use bathrooms) and embarrassed the heck out of the girls. On my way out a guy kinda did a double-take and checked the sign on the door and said Oh it’s for you. Brit said he looked like Ryan Gosling?

We went back to the condo for showers and then headed back to town to go to Costco. Lunch at the food court, cheapest lunch on Maui LOL. We bought the following: cilantro shrimp, garlic shrimp, salad kits, macadamia nuts, brussels sprouts, marlin steaks, opakapaka, and some trail mix for beach snacks. Oh and an entire pizza from the food court for my picky eater, Brit Brit.

On the way home, we stopped at Foodland and I got a musubi t-shirt and EVOO, salad dressing, and potatoes. Stopped at L&L for musubi and then back to the condo. We snorkeled for a bit at the condo beach but the surf was rough. We went swimming in the pool instead. I made shrimp salads for us and Brit had pizza.
