A friend in my guild made a quilt for her parents with this fabric, and I fell in LOVE. I simply adore vintage travel postcards and posters, and I immediately bought some of this fabric when I got home even though I wasn’t sure what I would use it for.

When my niece graduated from high school, I knew that I had to make her a quilt using this fabric. Like me, my niece has “the travel bug” and although she hasn’t been to many places, I decided to make her this quilt because I know she will travel to many places someday. And hopefully, with us!

The “pattern” is my own. First, I cut out each “postcard.” Then, I framed them in a thin frame of Kona black. My friend had used map fabric with her quilt, but I wanted something more fun, young, and colorful for my niece. After going through my stash, I had a quilt kit with Moda Grunge and decided it was perfect. I ordered a few more colors online, then added the strips to the Kona black. I just picked out colors in each picture, not caring if they were “matchy matchy.” Finally, I used a neutral Moda Grunge for sashing.

This quilt is extremely bittersweet for me because during its creation, our beloved cat, Meadow, passed away from heart disease/complications from small cell lymphoma. She always wanted to be near me when I was sewing, and after her passing, my sewing space seemed so empty, sad, and lonely without her. It took me a few months to be able to sew again. It was quilted by Cosmic Quilting in Laguna Hills. My niece will receive it the next time I visit Seattle.
